The Orthopedics Institute at Children's Hospital Colorado consistently provides some of the best care in the nation when it comes to orthopedics for children. We are one of only a few truly integrated children’s hospital orthopedics programs, meaning we offer several services all in one place: pediatric orthopedics, orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation medicine. Every physician, surgeon, rehabilitation specialist and nurse on our team is specially trained and has experience providing pediatric care for bones, muscles, movement and more in children from infancy to young adulthood.

At Children’s Colorado, we are setting the standard for pediatric orthopedic care. We do everything we can to help your child be their best, including working to create age-appropriate solutions that complement and grow with your child. We also provide special resources if needed. This includes access to pediatric orthopedic specialists who can provide further diagnostic testing and analysis using innovative and cutting-edge technology. Access to these resources means we’re able to offer more comprehensive therapies and treatments than any other children’s orthopedic clinic in our region.

Our Adaptive Recreation for Child Health program was established in the 1960s and was one of the first programs of its kind in the world. This program helps kids with physical disabilities learn to participate in a variety of recreational activities throughout the year, including skiing, snowboarding, biking, sailing and tennis. Participation in these activities often helps kids develop confidence, become more comfortable with their condition and improve their quality of life.

Children’s Colorado’s Center for Gait and Movement Analysis is the only center of its kind in the region, and is one of only 40 centers of its kind in the country. The Center offers several advanced motion capture techniques, including 3D motion technology, to analyze a child’s body movement and muscle activity while walking. This allows our doctors to plan and provide the best possible treatment for a child.

Our pediatric orthopedics team is also actively involved in research to expand our knowledge on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic injury, disease and deformity. We are currently working on more than 35 studies, including biomechanics. Biomechanics involves the study of certain body movements and how those movements may enhance sports performance and reduce the risk of injury. We are also working on spinal fusion research and using 3D printing to simulate difficult surgeries.

Adaptive Equipment Enables Skiing for Local Tech-Lover

Katie Gerk, 19, was born with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy, but that has not stopped her from skiing multiple seasons at Winter Park. Gerk is in the hospital's Adaptive Recreation for Childhood Health (ARCH) program, which began in 1968 as a way for kids with amputations to get involved with skiing. Since, the program has expanded to provide recreational resources for individuals with a wide range of medical conditions. Frank Chang, MD, orthopedic surgeon and medical director of the Center for Gait and Movement Analysis, is highlighted.


3D-Printed Spine Helps Girl with Scoliosis be More Active

July 1, 2016

Children’s Colorado was the first pediatric facility to use 3D-printed FIREFLY technology to treat scoliosis. Orthopedic spine surgeon Dr. Sumeet Garg performed the surgery on 13-year-old Jocelynn Taylor, who had a spine curvature over 100 degrees. Dr. Garg examined a 3D-printed replica of Jocelynn’s spine prior to surgery and connected rods to Jocelynn's spine with 3D-printed brackets during surgery.
