The SOAR Clinic at Children’s Hospital Colorado provides care and support to infants, children, young adults and families affected by a disorder of sex development (DSD). The Clinic team addresses physical, emotional and psychological concerns associated with these conditions.
DSDs are conditions in which the internal sex organs and/or external genitalia develop differently than the typical boy or girl. DSDs occur in approximately one in every 2,000 births. Our Clinic treats disorders like ambiguous genitalia, androgen insensitivity syndrome and clitoromegaly. See a full list of conditions below.
Sex development begins during pregnancy and continues throughout life. Sex development is complex, and the typical process can change to a less common path at multiple points. The term disorder of sex development (DSD) refers to atypical development.
At the first visit to the Clinic, patients and families meet with members of the care team. The team coordinates a care plan and recommends special testing and treatments. Families are welcome and encouraged to stay and join a support group after their appointment.
The SOAR Clinic provides a team approach to managing the health of patients with a DSD. The Clinic provides comprehensive and individualized care including evaluation, medical and surgical management, psychological counseling, support and education for families. Members of the team coordinate patient care to ensure effective and integrated treatment plans.
Children’s Colorado encourages parent participation in important health decisions, especially during gender assignment and surgical intervention. We also emphasize age-appropriate education for our patients, because education helps kids become comfortable with their diagnosis and share in decision-making as they grow. Ultimately, our goal is to provide continuous support for patients to help them grow into healthy, confident adults.
The SOAR Clinic includes experts from multiple pediatric specialties who care for babies, kids, teens and young adults every day. The specialists that a patient will see depends on their unique care plan.
